For the states where the home schooling rules are very stringent, the state requires more than a casual registration from the parents. Among the documents that you may have to produce are achievement test scores, a home school curriculum approved by the state and a specialist evaluation of your child’s educational progress.

You will also need teaching qualifications for you and your spouse, if you are both to be the teachers of your children, while they are engaged in home schooling. Some states may demand that state officials visit your home to scrutinize whether the children are indeed in receipt of an adequate high school education from you. These are just a few of the diverse documents and pertinent facts that you will have to be conscious of concerning your state’s home schooling laws.

Avoiding Burnout in Home Schooling

December 6th, 2009

It doesn’t matter whether you are studying in a traditional school or in a home schooling program, there will be a time when you will experience burnout. This is something that you have to avoid so that your teaching progress is not affected.

Here are a couple of useful tips that you can make use of in order to avoid an occurrence of home schooling burnout:

Understand your own limitations. From the very start, you should already be aware of your limitations and those of your child. You must be capable of doing things slowly sometimes, especially if your child is still very young since you have to bear in mind your child’s capacity to absorb. Most students are average learners (obviously), so you will have to take the lessons based on your children’s learning pace. Never expect your small child to read complicated selections nor your teen to get supa-dupa marks in SAT exams.

Don’t adopt strict schedules, because this can put pressure on your child. You should simply set an interesting routine for your child to follow. Children spend most of their time doing routine activities like getting up in the mornings, eating large breakfasts, reading, writing, doing light chores, etc. You must insist that they finish their routine activities before they can play outside or with the computer. Even the routine activities vary from day to day but you have to make sure that your child follows these routine activities. You can add in occasional incentives or fun activities if they finish their routine tasks earlier.

You should try to enjoy home schooling with your child. This is a good method of developing a strong relationship with your child and if you and your child can relate to each other, you will find it very much easier to handle curriculum struggles and motivation problems later on. Besides motivating and guiding your child, you can also follow some of your own hobbies like gardening or cooking. If your child sees you enjoying your own interests, then he or she will also be inclined to do likewise.

As your child is in a home schooling program, you should not attempt to copy a traditional schools environment. Try to use unusual methods when teaching your child. Home schooling is also about flexibility and creativity, and if you can achieve a light-hearted but firm atmosphere, you can more than likely prevent burnout.

Always try to remember that with home schooling, you don’t have to structure your teaching methods in the traditional way. You can just do things in a fun way especially with very young children so that they learn naturally. Just ensure you keep the day in the right perspective to prevent burnout. Although your children might forget some of the day’s lessons, that’s all right too because somehow they grow in intelligence as well as in physique.

Of course, your children will always cherish your moments together and remember fondly how well you treated them. The song goes: “… there’s no place like home” and for little students this is the best place to learn their first lessons in life. If your teens are already in high school or in college, they too can still pursue home schooling if they want to. That is also a good decision because you get to monitor your offsprings’ performance.

Parents always try to look after their children’s best interests, so, if after careful consideration, you still think that home schooling is the best option for your family, then run with it. Just follow the tips mentioned above to prevent burnout. Make time for enjoyable activities from time to time in order to prevent monotony.

December 4th, 2009

Fashion appears to dictate everything these days. From what you wear to what you name your dog, everything you do is dictated by the need to be fashionable. Cute dog names are hard to come by and even harder to choose. This is because as soon as something is in fashion, than it is out again.

Who would want to choose a cute dog name that may not be fashionable tomorrow? So, people tend to play it safe, which is why the same names have been so popular for so long. To try and break that cycle, five cool dog names are listed below with our reasons why you should choose one of them for your dog.

Phoenix: What could be cooler than a bird that goes up in flames and then rises from the ashes? Phoenix is one of the cute dog names that will never go out of fashion because it is rooted in history. It has a timeless quality which has somewhat surprisingly failed to increase its popularity.

Star: Star is one of the cute dog names because it has so many connotations that you can have a hard time finding out where to begin. A star in the sky is a phenomenon and a star can refer to someone that outperforms in a certain field. It is indeed a high form of praise and so is definitely a cute dog name.

Lady: Lady is one of the most popular dog names but it is also one of the cool dog names because of Disney. Lady and the Tramp was a huge hit and made the name popular but also gave it some credibility. In this case popularity is second to coolness.

Elvis: The coolest of cute dog names. Elvis Presley was definitely cool and remains cool today even after his death. It is infinitely cool to call your dog after such a tremendous icon who never goes out of fashion himself.

Shadow: There is a dark and mysterious quality about Shadow that makes it a cool dog name. It would be best used on a big breed of dog though, because it wouldn’t have the same striking effect with a small breed.

Whatever cute dog names you consider for your mut, it is one sure way to give your dog an identity of their own and make your dog unforgettable to others.

How Do You Get Scholarship Grants or Financial Aid?

December 2nd, 2009

What is the real cost of a college education and is there a financing scheme available? Well, lets face reality – a college education is very expensive, causing a lot of parents to do a double take when their children are considering attending a community college or a state university.

There are a lot of things which make up the total cost of a college education and the tuition fee is just a part of the big picture of getting into college. Other everyday expenditures include food, transportation, housing, pocket money and other sundry fees, which, when added up can be a significant portion when financing a college education.

These days, a lot of families, even those who belong to the upper-class, think about applying for financial aid. College grants and scholarships are an excellent method of financial assistance. Grant and scholarship programs do not require the students or their families to repay the amount given.

Scholarships and grants are of two basic kinds: (i) scholarships awarded based on financial need, depending on the financial inability of the student and their families to pay for the college education, and (ii) scholarships based on merit, for example the talent of the student in sports is the deciding factor. A students academic prowess comes under the merit-based college grant and scholarship system too.

Sometimes, college grants and scholarships combine the merit and need criteria to ease the whole financial aid process. Numerous students and their families are on the look-out for this type of financial aid. However, college grants and scholarships are limited in number although there is a growing number of students year after year.

Qualifying students can get into federal and a number of state scholarship programs. Some of which are the following:

Federal or National Pell Grants ” this is a program, funded nationwide, which is intended to give assistance to any qualified undergraduate student pursuing post-secondary schooling. Grants and scholarships of this kind are given to those who have not yet finished a baccalaureate degree.

The worth of the grant can vary year after year and will depend largely on the financial needs of the student, the expenses that will be incurred whilst going to the chosen university or college, and the availability of funds from the national government. This kind of grant will open up an opportunity for students to succeed in securing financial aid from the national government.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) ” this is a programme for ongoing undergraduate students with dire financial needs. However, not all students can get this type of grant. It will depend on the circumstances of the student and the availability of funds at the school concerned.

Another form of financial assistance that students and families can turn to is student loans. However, this kind of financial assistance has to be repaid. The financial requirements of the family must be taken into consideration to avoid paying higher interest rates.

It is also necessary to learn all the terms of the lending agency such as the schedule of repayment and interest rates, before signing up.

Work study is a quite different sort of financial aid which requires students to work to sustain themselves during their college stay. Work study is usually carried out on college campus and is the most usual kind of financial aid in all of the universities and colleges in the USA. Typically, students work for schools for 10-15 hours a week.

Scholarships, grants and other types of financial assistance to acquire a college education is really multi-faceted, confusing at times, and even down-right exasperating. However, the good thing is that a college education is a non-refundable and non-toxic form of investment. It is for the student’s future!

Learning Spanish Tips

November 20th, 2009

Spanish is a language that has in recent years interested many in its study. Spanish is a common choice to learn for foreign speakers. In high schools today, Spanish is quickly becoming the language of choice to learn for students.

In the United States in particular, Spanish communities have grown greatly in recent years leading to an even greater demand for Spanish speaking skills.

You might be interested in learning Spanish because your co-workers already speak it or because you want better job opportunities at your current employment or at a job in the future.

Learning to speak a new foreign language is a great goal that can bring about many personal rewards. However, it should still be noted that learning a foreign language is a long task and it is not a weekend project that can be completed quickly. There are a few things you should keep in mind, however, in order to speed along your learning process.

A foreign language, including Spanish, is best studied a little bit every day instead of once a week or once in every great while.

The reason for this is that studying a little bit each day will reduce the time that you need to spend at each study session reviewing the material from before. By doing a little bit each day, you can keep moving along nicely and increasing your knowledge of the language.

This process of a little bit of study each day also increases your ability to adapt to the new language and so you are better able to get a handle on it than if you were to study it every once in a while.

Whatever your case may be for learning a new language, Spanish is a very nice choice because of the great wealth of learning materials available for learning the language. Good luck on your Spanish studies!

Observe the trends in the job market. The medical field hires a lot of capable people every year, and the call for medical professionals is still mounting at present. Even some of those who already have a career are looking for means to join this particular field.

Nurses are wanted badly. The call for nursing graduates is growing. Health agencies and other services are searching for highly trained and skilled nurses. This is probably why many students are attracted to this sphere.

The primary problem that most students run into before they go to college, especially with a nursing course, is financial support. Though this field is very much in call, not all aspirant nursing students are able to graduate due to economic problems.

Public colleges which present nursing courses can cost you around $20,000 a year; and if you want to attend college in a private university, the cost can escalate as high as $50,000 a year. Home Schooling and its Effects on the Family

November 8th, 2009

If a survey by the National Center For Education Statistics is to be believed, roughly 1.1 million children underwent home schooling in 2005 alone. That’s a lot of children. Not so long ago, homeschooling used to be a radical statement – something like a declaration of independence.

It was the conservative Christians who advocated homeschooling in the 1980’s and legalized it in every State. But nowadays the typical homeschooling pupil is not religiously motivated.

Later surveys indicate that parents are quite fed up with the public school system where a lot of the learning is superficial and compulsory. They are also concerned about the negative environment in school, ranging from drugs and abuse to negative pressure from their peers.

Because of this, we have a surprising mixture of people who make up the homeschooling world of today. They cut across all religious creeds and all regional borders. Their main goal is providing meaningful and productive education through a method that strengthens the bond between the various members of the family.

All these families have one main thing in common – a long enduring commitment to the sanctity of childhood. The children in these families are accorded a primary position. Many believe, and, I think, rightly so, that home schooling allows parents to bring up their children in a more natural and caring environment.

Public schools can make a child anxious, subservient and downright mean. Children who receive their education at home are protected from these damaging, negative influences until they attain an age where they can withstand them.

Home-schooling draws the whole family into the quasi religious job of teaching. Everyone is put to work. Both the parents together form a bond with the children. Any experience can be turned into an educational experience. Both the parents are aware of exactly what is going into their child’s education.

Parents also have a greater control over the kind of religious and moral values that the child is taught. Even watching a film together can become an educational experience. Trips to the libraries, zoos, museums and other places become educational as well as recreational.

A home-schooling family is usually dependent on the income of one earning member. That means that often outgoings have to be curtailed and proper planning of expenditure is a must. This helps to bring the family members together and everybody becomes involved in the task of not spending money.

Merely having a parent at home to supervise, to nurture and to care for the children brings with it a lot of love and caring. Even the husband takes part and there is just no room for boredom.

All right, problems do occur, and there will be many misgivings in your mind, but when you know that your kids can always count on you, and your kids know it too, then homeschooling becomes a richly rewarding experience.

Your Japanese Studies

November 4th, 2009

There are many reason that one might want to learn Japanese. Some people are interested in Japanese because of the cultural phenomenon that many products from Japan have become… from video games to anime.

However, there are other reasons, too, for wanting to learn Japanese. Some people are interested in Japanese because Japan is the second largest economy and it would help them greatly in their business efforts. Some people are impressed by Japan’s deep cultural traditions.

Japanese can be mastered and you can become proficient in it just like any other language, however, we must remember a few things if we want to truly be successful.

For English speakers, Japanese is a more difficult language to learn because it does not use the roman script and also because there are few cognates.

Spanish or French, on the other hand, use the same script as English and also share many words because English borrowed a great number of words from these languages and other Latin influences thus resulting in many cognates between the languages. This means that you can pick up a great number of words simply because they are very similar to the English equivalents.

This means that learning Japanese is a little bit more tricky but I am not saying that it is impossible.

However, my best advice for you is to keep your reasons for learning Japanese strong if you want to get far in it.

If you really want to learn Japanese to a high level, then make sure that your reasons for studying it are strong.

Whether you want to have a better glimpse of the Japanese culture and traditions or whether you want to have a better understanding of your favorite anime series, make sure that the desire is strong in your heart for learning Japanese.

This will mean that your journey of studying Japanese will be kept well even though it is a strong one. So, keep studying and every time you feel that you are growing weak in your resolve to learn Japanese, remember the reason you want to learn it and keep that pushing you forward. Good luck!
