Is There An Atkins Grapefruit Diet?

June 19th, 2010

The Atkins Grapefruit diet is a diet plan, not supported by the estate of Dr. Atkins, that hopes to play on the fame of the grapefruit diet and the Atkins diet name. However, a closer look at this diet shows that it may not be all it claims to be.

First of all, it’s pretty difficult to find information on the Atkins grapefruit diet plan. Smart people know that when someone is perpetrating a deception, or a con, they will often gloss over the facts. This is what the Atkins grapefruit diet seems to do in an attempt to get people to associate it with two supposedly effective diets.

Is the Atkins Grapefruit Diet part of the Atkins Diet or recommended by the late Dr. Atkins’ company? The answer is a resounding no, not only is there no mention of the Atkins Grapefruit Diet on the Atkins web site, but there is no fruit of any kind allowed in the list of allowed foods in the Atkins diet Induction phase either.

The induction phase allows the following foods: Fish of all kinds. All fowl such as turkey and chicken. Any shellfish. Any meat such as beef or pork. Eggs cooked in any style including fried. Cheese. Vegetables. Herbs and Spices. Fats and Oils. Low carbohydrate beverages including diet soft drinks.

Please, notice one thing – that fruit is not on that list at all! Later phases of the Atkins diet do include small amounts of fruits such as cantaloupe and even strawberries, and the pre-maintenance and maintenance phases even allow small quantities of grapefruit, but when looked at in comparison with the amount of Grapefruit advised on the Atkins Grapefruit Diet there is a massive discrepancy.

The Atkins Grapefruit Diet recommends a cup of grapefruit juice or a cup of grapefruit sections, with 8 and 18 carbs respectively. Even the most generous phases of the Atkins diet recommends restricting consumption to below 8 carbs per day, with regard to grapefruit. That is a direct contradiction of one diet to the other.

Most sensible people would have a look at the Atkins website itself the moment they heard of the Atkins Grapefruit Diet and when they found no mention of that diet on their site, a red light would flash and an alarmbell would sound.

In general, remember this: any diet that relies too heavily on one food, such as grapefruit on a grapefruit diet, is unhealthy for any but extremely short periods. The Atkins Grapefruit Diet is not associated with the Atkins diet, and may interfere with the results of the Atkins diet in its early phases.

Why You Should Make Walking A Key Part Of Your Daily Routine

June 14th, 2010

If you are one of the many people who would like to get in shape and lose a few pounds, then this is a goal which is readily obtainable. It really is very simple – if you wish to lose weight then you must take on fewer calories in the form of food and drink than you use up in the form of physical activity. Consistently burning off more calories than you take on will, over time, result in weight loss. There is no magic formula, pill or wonder drug that will modify that simple equation.

So if you want to lose weight then you need to eat and drink less (by dieting), use up more calories (by exercising) – or both. Doing both is very definitely the most effective solution. Regular physical exercise will increase your metabolic rate – the speed at which you burn calories. If you exercise on a regular basis then your higher metabolic rate will mean that you use up calories faster even when you’re not taking exercise – for example, when you’re sitting reading a book, watching the TV – even when you’re sound asleep.

For may people the very thought of taking exercise conjures up unpleasant and unattractive images – but there’s really no reason to shy away from exercise – it needn’t mean that you have to get all hot, sweaty and out of breath. Walking is a form of exercise that we all do every day – to some extent at least – and it’s also one of the best exercises that you can take.

Current medical advice suggests that we should all be trying to take around 10,000 steps on a daily basis. That’s equivalent to a distance of somewhere between four and a half and five miles for most people. It sounds like a long way – but you will probably be pleasantly surprised at how achievable it actually is. After all, you’re not starting from scratch. Those 10,000 steps include the normal walking that you would be doing every day anyway.

Leave the car at home and walk to work – or get off the bus a couple of stops early and finish the last part of your journey on foot. If you do take the car then park it in a corner of the parking lot that’s well away from the entrance so that you have further to walk. Take the stairs instead of the lift. Take a fifteen minute walk at lunch time. It all adds up.

Apart from a pair of comfortable shoes, you don’t need any special equipment to get the benefits of walking for exercise. However, you might find it useful to invest in a pedometer – especially if you’re walking is broken up into short sessions throughout your day. It will help you to keep track of your progress and to stay motivated.

An mp3 player might be a good idea if you are able to fit longer walks into your day. The time and the miles will pass much more quickly when you’re listening to your favourite music.

I like to make things inevitable in my life, and getting rid of all the chips and ice-cream from my house is the easiest way possible.

There are a couple of way you can remedy the situation are you are feeling truly ill from not being able to have your snack foods. There are some healthy alternatives out there that I can still consider junk food. This would be something like yogurt or even frozen yogurt. Rapid Weight Loss

June 11th, 2010

Other than physical appearance, weight affects a person in various ways. It could be the overall quality of life, self-confidence, depression, health risks, or physical incapacities. There are a lot of advantages to losing weight. It is for this reason that a lot of people are searching for a weight loss technique that will trim down those excess pounds and get a beautiful, jaw-dropping body.

First of all, an overweight person should do is find a doctor to provide the best weight loss regimen for you. This will only be done after a complete physical examination, which will to the recommendation of a proper weight loss technique. To lose excess weight fast and permanently, four aspects of your life should be changed: what to eat, how to eat, behaviour and amount of exercise.

Here are quick tips that can change an over-weight persons’s life:

1: Fast weight loss is achieved by a multi-faceted plan that comprises mindset, exercise, and, in some cases, dietary supplements. Commence by following a diet regimen that can be easily incorporated into your current way of life. Start an exercise regimen that requires at least fifteen minutes a day lively walking, running, swimming and/or dancing.

2: Set yourself realistic goals. The ability to focus and have a proper mental outlook enables someone trying to lose weight to quickly shed those extra kilos. You must develop discipline and a proper outlook, a dieter will never become discouraged and give up.

3: Listen to what your body is saying. everybody’s body behaves in a different way to the various fast weight loss plans. Substitute one regimen for another to judge the body’s reaction. An exercise program ought to be suited to one’s body, as some are not able to exercise as strenuously as others. If walking is all that you can do, then walk, for this is one of the best exercises. Don’t forget that muscles burn calories, so try to put on a little more muscle – it looks good too.

4: Eat more fibre because it makes a person feel full sooner and stays in the stomach longer, slowing down the pace at which you will be hungry again. For example, a few slices of whole grain bread will stay in the body longer and stave off hunger longer than white bread, which converts to glucose faster. giving you a quick sugar spike, which soon passes, making you hungry again.

5: Stay away from fried food especially deep-fried, since it contains a lot of fat. But remember, although fish and chicken are considered to be much leaner than beef, these white meats can retain even more fat than beef if it is fried. It is advisable those on a strict diet opt for grilled food, as it does not have much fat after the food has been prepared.

6: Drink lots of fluid. Drinking at least six to eight glasses of water a day keeps the body ‘flushed’ and since weight loss depends on how the body eliminates body wastes, the body must stay hydrated.

So, all in all, discipline and consistent application is still the way to quick weight loss. Light dieting, workout, and the correct amount of nutritional supplements performed in regularly everyday will result in a faster weight loss than having a huge, but short-lived campaign that is followed by a return to the bad old ways, since this only leads to gaining more weight than before the weight loss plan was started.

What Benefits Does Nordic Walking Offer You?

June 10th, 2010

Regular physical exercise – taken on a frequent and consistent basis – is recognised as a major factor in improving health levels and lowering the probability of – or avoiding completely – numerous health problems and diseases. We are probably all aware of this – however, it can still be very hard to summon up the motivation to exercise on a regular basis. For many people, the perception of exercise is that it is physically exhausting, boring and costly (membership fees for gyms can be surprisingly high). It can also be difficult to find the time to fit exercise into your daily routine.

One form of exercise which most of us carry out every day is walking. It’s an important influence on the overall health and fitness of an individual. When undertaken on a regular basis, walking has the potential to provide many benefits to an individual’s health. It can help to lower the risk of stroke and heart disease as well as reducing blood pressure. It helps to combat depression and anxiety. It will help you to sleep better – you will have more energy and feel less fatigued throughout the day. It can even help to reduce the probability of getting certain types of cancer. Some recent research suggests that it may possibly help to avoid Alzheimer’s disease. It will also burn calories and help you to lose weight.

There’s no need for any special equipment to start walking – all you need is a comfortable pair of shoes. You can also fit walking into your daily routine whenever it’s most convenient for you. If you can walk for half an hour a day, 3 or 4 times weekly, then you will quickly begin to see – and feel – the benefits. If you can slowly work up to 10,000 steps daily – the equivalent of 5 miles for most people – you will really see a difference. You will look better and feel better.

If you find that, having slowly increased the distance and time that you walk for daily, you want to get a little more out of your walking program, then Nordic walking may be something that you might like to consider. Nordic walking is a fairly new development which started in Finland when skiers wanted a way to keep fit in the summer months. It’s pretty much like skiing without skis – or snow.

There are two main advantages to Nordic walking. Firstly, it utilises the upper body and promotes activity in muscles which are not normally heavily used during normal walking activity. Secondly, it reduces the load on the lower body muscles and joints.

These two factors result in even further benefits in comparison with conventional walking. There is a 20 to 40% increase in the rate of energy expenditure – and the additional upper body movement promotes agility and flexibility. There is less stress in the lower body muscles and joints as a consequence of reduced lower body loading. For some walkers, the use of poles might have safety benefits – and this could allow people recovering from injury or illness to get a higher intensity workout than would otherwise be possible.

Whether you go for Nordic or conventional walking, the prospective health benefits are very worthwhile for you. Before you start out on any new exercise program you should seek the advice of your doctor – especially if you haven’t exercised for a while or if you have any medical conditions. However, if you’re sensible and start off gradually, then you will be able to gain some very real and significant health benefits by walking.

Boost the effectiveness of your walking workout with Fitflops fitness shoes. They’re specially designed to increase the amount of work your lower body muscles perform during normal walking activity. Both women’s and men’s Fitflops are available in a wide choice of colors and styles.

Breast Cancer Treatments Stages

June 10th, 2010

Breast cancer has been broken out with great havoc. Approximately 40,500 women become victim of this chronic disease each year in England and Wales. Men also have not been saved from this trauma, though women are the major sufferer of this bloody bug. This syndrome has not left Pakistan too with its effect. Breast cancer requires very much attention and awareness among our people so that we may save ourselves with this ailment.

In the country like Pakistan lack of awareness, hesitation, lump of problems and shortage of financial resources make patient unable to cure and he goes into the mouth of fatality soon. There are a number of treatments carried out for the cure of breast cancer. The treatment varies from patient to patient depending upon his immune system, age and stage of the cancer. A number of ways can be opted like surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy and so on.

Above all one should know about this disease and its symptoms. It is always recommended that women above 40 years should have their regular medical checkup because they have greater chances of breast cancer. Everyone can have his/her own check up at home. According to Consultant breast surgeon Clive Griffith, when someone feels any abnormality in the shape of his/her breast or some deformity near the breast must consult the physician. Different people face different behaviors like some women have lump at their armpit or the darkening or zit on the breast, thickening of tissues, behavior of breast during menstrual time period, sometimes become tender near armpits. After hysterectomy (removal of the womb) and menopause women should be conscious about their health.

Sooner the cancer is detected effective is the therapy. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) advises to check out regularly for the symptoms of breast cancer. The classification of breast cancer has been done on the basis of development of the disease and hence has been categorized into four stages. This classification helps in treatment of the disease in a clear way.

Early (zero) stage of breast cancer is the most initial stage when the tumor is limited to only breast tissue and is not regulated towards lymph node.

Stage 1 of breast cancer is the stage when the tumor size grows to 1 cm and other tissues and organs are not affected.

In Stage 2A the tumor involves lymph node with the increase in size less than 2 cm but when the size ranges from 2-5 cm it may not involve axillary lymph nodes.

In Stage 2B the tumor size increases from 5 cm with or without involvement of axillary lymph nodes.

Late (metastatic) stages of breast cancer are the phase when the trauma has been spread to lymph nodes and other tissues.

Stage 3A is the local spread of the cancer in which melanoma spreads to size 5 cm with or without axillary lymph nodes with the network structure of tumor cells with surrounding tissues.

Stage 3B is when the tumor size is not definite but metastases and penetrates into the skin, chest wall and internal lymph nodes of mammary gland (present inside the chest below breast).

Stage 3C is the stage when sarcoma has been spread with greater metastases with involvement of lymph nodes. The tumor may be of any size.

Stage 4 is the tumor that has spread to the parts of the body like bones, lungs, liver, brain or distant lymph nodes.

Different treatments have been developed to cure the cancer to protect and save the life of patient as soon as possible. The doctors say that sooner the patient comes sooner they try to chuck out this disease from him. Sometimes surgery is carried out to remove cancer cells. Some lymph nodes are taken from the underarms to check out whether it is infected with the cancer cells, this process is called biopsy or lymph node dissection. It is just a method to detect the infected cells.

Breast-conserving surgery is a sort of surgery to remove cancer cells but the breast is not removed. Lumpectomy is a surgery to remove tumor cells and tissues around. In another type of surgery, Partial or segmental mastectomy the infected part of breast and the tissues around are cut off.

Total mastectomy is the operation in which the whole breast is removed from the body because it has been so infected that it may affect other body organs and no treatment can cure it. Modified radical mastectomy is done when many of lymph nodes underarm, chest wall muscle have also been infected. In this case too breast is removed from the body. Even after the removal of complete cancer part visible at the time of operation procedure, some other therapies are also conducted to remove the suspected cancer cells left into the body. These therapies include radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and targeted therapy.

Sometimes after mastectomy when some part of breast that is infected is removed is surgically reshaped. The process is called breast reconstruction. In this case patient’s own tissues from any part other than breast are implanted filling with saline or silicone gel. All such facilities are FDA recommended.

Radiation therapy is the therapy in which cancer cells are killed by applying high energy x-rays onto the infected part. For external therapy x-ray device is placed outside the body while for internal therapy radioactive substance sealed in needle, wire, seed or catheter is placed directly near the infected site.

Chemotherapy is another traditional procedure of treatment in which drugs are given to the patient to stop the growth of cancer cells. Drugs can be administered orally, muscularly or through spinal cord depending on the stage of the disease.

In hormone therapy hormones are removed to block the growth of cancer cells. The hormone estrogen gives medium to cancer cells to grow produced from ovaries. Ovaries ablation is another therapy to stop the ovaries to make estrogen.

Targeted therapy is a method of killing cancer cell using drugs without harming normal uninfected tissues.

Other newer techniques are also being adopted due to their efficiency like sentinel lymph node biopsy followed by surgery in which the first infected lymph node is treated and operated out to save the rest part of the body from this infection. High-dose chemotherapy with stem cell transplant is also conducted.

Though the life risk of breast cancer is 10% but the important is to have a life with quality rather than quantity. The war against breast cancer has increasing daily. Every person must go for regular checkups to avoid or detect such diseases.

Boxing VS MMA

June 8th, 2010

I am more of a mixed martial arts fan than a boxing fan, but I do enjoy boxing every now and then. For me personally MMA is more exciting purely because there are more ways for a fighter to win the fight. So many times have I seen on forums and websites people arguing over which is the better sport and which fighters are tougher? The truth is toughness comes down to individuals, there are tough boxers just like there are tough MMA fighters. So the question remains; can boxing and mixed martial arts co-exist?

First of all let me address this ridiculous notion that ‘Boxing is dying man!’. No, it most certainly is not! Boxing has been around since around 2000 BC. It is one of the oldest sports in the world and is still one of the biggest sports in the world. Something that’s been around that long does not just die and wither away. Boxing is still more popular than MMA and has thrown up some great fights in recent times.

It has been great to watch a sport like MMA grow from a child that nobody wanted to the spectacle it is today; generating millions of dollars in TV revenue for fighters and Mr White. Mixed martial arts organizations are doing their best to rectify the mistakes made by boxing over the years, of which there are many, but in doing so they have found some new ones themselves. Neither of these sports are perfect, although mixed martial arts is still young and has time to adjust, whereas boxing is pretty much a fully grown adult. And as we all know adults find it more difficult to change.

So can boxing and MMA co-exist? My answer is yes, of course they can, In fact this competition may be exactly what the world of boxing needs. No longer does it have the monopoly on contact sports. There is a young buck in town and he’s eating well and growing fast. Either boxing jump starts itself or it just might find itself loosing more than just it’s old retired fighters to the sport of MMA. These sports can actually learn from each other and who knows? Maybe we’ll see a world championship boxing fight on the same event as a mixed martial arts title fight.

So I ask all you boxing fans to welcome the new sport and appreciate it for what it is. And to the MMA fans I say ‘Respect your elders’, boxing has been around a lot longer than you and will be with for many more years to come.
